What is TRUESSEC?

The TRUESSEC.EU project is a Coordination and Support Action (CSA). The focus will be on certification and labelling of trustworthiness properties from a multidisciplinary perspective. Made up of social sciences, humanities and Information and Communication Technology (SSH and ICT), there is a specific emphasis on human rights and European values.

The CSA will build upon existing activities and bring together an inter-disciplinary community of stakeholders, encompassing technology providers, public bodies, consumers and concerned citizens. The consortium is made up of the private, public, research and third sectors across Europe, who have the common challenge of the assurance and certification of emerging internet-based technologies in their domain.

TRUESSEC.EU Project Objectives

The main objective of the TRUESSEC.EU project is to foster trust and confidence in new and emerging ICT products and services throughout Europe. The project aims to encourage the adoption of appropriate assurance and certification processes.

TRUESSEC aims to:

Publish and widely disseminate a set of recommendations for a European Trust-Enhancing Label
Nurture a strong and durable network of stakeholders, supported by an online platform
Develop a criteria catalogue for the assurance and certification of secure internet-based components, systems and services

How will TRUESSEC achieve this?

To achieve these objectives, TRUESSEC.EU will follow a combined analytic and synthetic approach to:

Evaluate the impact of certification and labelling in the perceived trustworthiness of ICT products and services
Analyse the barriers that prevent broader adoption of labelling by the industry or a wider acceptance by consumers
Analyse the incentives that would facilitate such adoption and acceptance
Analyse the impact of the assurance and certification of the trustworthiness of these services —in terms of both risks and benefits— on the European civil society through the adoption of a multi-factor and multi-stakeholder approach covering legal, ethical, cultural, economic/business and technological aspects
Benchmark existing certification labels, business practices and related initiatives at the European Union (EU) level
Create an internet-based platform and community, connecting European citizens, technology and service providers and policy-makers in an online debate fuelled by TRUESSEC.EU’s findings
Establish a durable community for support, coordination and dissemination activities, including the dissemination of the research and innovation action projects involved as part of the wider cluster within the H2020 program
